Training Enhances and Develops Entrepreneurs

The National Centre for Small and Micro Enterprises Development (NCSMED) facilitated a week-long business training for the business start ups housed at its Business Incubation Centre in Suva.

NCSMED Training Officer Buloulevu Vakataumavi said the training provided participants with information on business success factors one needed to consider when running a business together enhancing their skills and knowledge in managing a small business.

“This is a comprehensive set of training instruments using an action-oriented approach and experiential learning method to develop and enhance the business management and personal competencies of participants, mostly in the context of income and employment generation,” Ms Buloulevu said.

One of the outcomes of tahe business training was the production of a business plan for these budding entrepreneurs.

According to Ms Buloulevu, this particular training is unique because of its methodology- training is highly experiential meaning that there are more class based activities and exercises. Lectures are almost nonexistent.

“Each participant is given a chance to present his/her business plan and has the opportunity to discuss it with a representative from a Bank. This gives them a chance to test the viability of their business plan and also get the experience of presenting it to someone from a financial institution.”

NCSMED’s business training is easily adapted to the literacy level of participants- which means that training can also be conducted in English, i-taukei and Hindi language, depending on the needs of participants.

One of the participants, Rachel Beryl Temo said the business training has given her the skills and the confidence to pursue her dreams of owning a profitable business.

“I currently own a small embroidery business. I do not know a thing about book-keeping. Through this training I was able to put together a simple business plan for my business.”  explained Ms Temo.

Another participant, Vaipuna Semisi of Tuvalu said the training was informative and interesting, and she can now focus on the improving her business through following the business plan she created as a guide.
