Women Can Do Anything

Labasa-based Gopal’s Poultry Farm was established in 2010 by Meena Gounden and her family. The 38-year-old mother of two hails from Vunivau, Labasa and runs the business with her husband Govind and their two daughters.

Meena started her business with 200 chicks with the assistance of the Northern Development Program (NDP).

“I started this business without any prior knowledge of poultry farming for commercial purposes. It was by fluke really. Where I come from, most of the poultry farmers are men so I wanted to break that trend. I found out that NDP was giving out financial assistance for small businesses and I decided to apply for it. That was the beginning of what is now a very successful family business,” said Meena.

Without any prior knowledge of running a business initially, Meena underwent financial and technical trainings facilitated by the NCSMED in order to enhance her knowledge in running a business.

“Now I am well versed in raising layer birds and have enhanced my knowledge in formulating a well-mapped out business plan and at the same time structured book-keeping of the income and expenditure incurred by the business as well as tracked savings. All these have attributed to the sustainability of the business.”

Gopal’s Poultry Farm was an award recipient in the 2012 Westpac Women in Business Awards as well as the 2015 Microfinance Finance Awards and the latest scooping two awards at this year’s 52nd Fiji Development Bank National Small and Medium Enterprises awards.

Meena Gounden is an epitome of hard work and perseverance. And she’s proven that women can indeed do anything.

“The key to being successful is staying positive and being steadfast and not giving up when faced with obstacles.”
