A Great Moving Experience

The trucking business can be very profitable, but it is incredibly competitive. Many truckers try to get into the business every year and end up failing.

This outcome usually happens to people who are great truckers but are not good business owners. Knowing how to run and grow your trucking business takes more than knowing how to drive a truck

These are the sentiments made by Thomas Wong; the owner of Wong’s Investment Limited (WIL), a Fijian- owned family trucking company based in Suva.

“The most important step to be a successful owner-operator is to support the right market niche. As a rule, owner-operators should focus on markets that the large carriers avoid. In other words, consider hauling specialized loads,” says Mr Wong.

WIL was established in 2016 by Mr Wong, who has had 27-years working experience in the timber industry.

“While working in the timber industry, I noticed there was a great demand for trucking services. This motivated me to delve into knowing more about this business. I ascertained that trucking is a highly profitable business because the demand has always been high.”

WIL focuses primarily on timber and natural resources industry as well as providing transportation services for companies or persons looking to haul heavy cargo.

“My other area of interest is in container services and fish transportation.”

The company currently has a dumper truck worth around $213,000 and we are fortunate to have secured a contract for gravel extraction from a quarry in Navua and delivered to a major site in Suva.

“This is a family-operated company managed by my wife and two adult sons. WIL strives to be a reliable service provider and be a source of employment opportunities in the future once we expand.”

WIL is currently based at NCSMED’s business incubation centre.
